About
Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson was an American alto saxophonist and singer whose career bridged jump blues, jazz, bebop, and R&B. He became known both for his gritty, energetic voice and for his instrumental skill, serving as a transitional figure between blues traditions and the new languages of post–World War II jazz.
His professional career included spells with important orchestras and bands: he began with Milton Larkin’s orchestra, played alongside musicians such as Tom Archia, and was a member of Cootie Williams’s band. He also worked with Big Bill Broonzy and took part in recordings and performances with contemporaries from the blues and jazz circuits.
Vinson recorded notable songs from the era’s repertoire and appeared on live and studio albums that showcased his versatility as a soloist and vocalist. The nickname “Cleanhead” refers to a notorious incident related to his appearance that became his personal trademark.
His legacy endures in the influence he had on singers and saxophonists who moved between blues and jazz, and in the recorded documents that capture a voice and instrumental phrasing recognized by critics and the public.
