About

Ellen Terry was one of the foremost actresses of English theatre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, regarded as the leading Shakespearean interpreter of her generation. Born into a large theatrical family, she began her career as a child in Shakespearean roles and established herself in London and on tours around the country, building a repertoire of classical plays and dramatic comedies.

Her career included pauses and returns: she married very young and experienced relationships that led to brief withdrawals from the stage, but her comeback in 1874 marked the start of her most critically and popularly celebrated period. Her performances in Shakespeare’s heroines and other classics were widely praised, shaping acting conventions and the reception of Elizabethan drama on the British stage.

Beyond her work as an actress, Terry belonged to a generation that professionalized and expanded women's presence on stage, influencing the training of subsequent actresses. Her death in 1928 closed a long and distinguished career, and her name remained a compulsory reference for Shakespearean performance in Britain.
