About

Fanny Brice, stage name of Fania Borach, was an American actress and comedian prominent in theater, radio, and film. She became a leading figure on Broadway as a cast member of Florenz Ziegfeld’s revues, where her comic gifts and talent for caricature and satire drew attention from audiences and critics.

She appeared in a limited number of films but made an impression with memorable characters and through musicals and productions that linked Broadway to Hollywood. On radio she achieved wide popularity, becoming a familiar voice in American entertainment in the early decades of the 20th century.

Her life inspired two film adaptations centered on her story: Funny Girl (1968), starring Barbra Streisand, and its sequel Funny Lady (1975). She was married three times and had two children with her second husband, Jules Arnstein.

Fanny Brice died in 1951 from a cerebral hemorrhage and is buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. Her legacy endures as one of the great comedians of the golden age of American theater and entertainment.
