About

Melba Moore, born Beatrice Melba Smith, is an American singer and actress known for her powerful voice and versatility across musical theater, soul, R&B and disco. Trained in music, she began her career in the late 1960s in stage productions such as Hair and rose to prominence after winning the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress for her performance in Purlie, an honor that opened doors to work on Broadway, in film and on television.

On record, she achieved commercial and critical success in the 1970s and 1980s: hits like “This Is It” and “Love’s Comin’ at Ya” established her on the U.S. and U.K. charts while earning Grammy nominations. Later recordings expanded her repertoire into contemporary R&B, dance and gospel, and she has maintained a steady presence onstage and in the studio.

Beyond her musical career, Moore has headlined television series and films, appeared in notable stage productions and led numerous tours and solo shows. Her career has been marked by artistic reinvention and a lasting influence on the R&B/disco scene and musical theater, with recognition for both her vocal technique and stage presence.
