About

Grigory Aleksandrovich Potemkin was a prominent 18th-century statesman and military commander, a central figure in Catherine II’s circle. Born into the lower nobility, he rose to prominence after supporting the 1762 coup and consolidated his career as a leader during the Russo-Turkish wars, distinguishing himself in the campaign that led to the annexation of Crimea in 1783.

As the empress’s favorite and advisor, Potemkin held numerous high offices: he became a prince of the Russian Empire, supreme commander of various forces, and the chief administrator of the imperial south. In 1775 he was appointed governor-general of the newly acquired southern provinces and launched a large colonization project for the steppes, founding port cities such as Kherson, Nikolayev, Sevastopol and Yekaterinoslav, which facilitated the creation of a fleet on the Black Sea.

His work combined political ambition, military modernization and urban and architectural initiatives, including projects such as the Taurida Palace. The legend of “Potemkin villages” reflects the complex public memory of his methods of governance. Potemkin died in 1791 during negotiations related to the conflict with the Ottoman Empire, leaving a marked legacy in the expansion and strategic organization of the empire’s southern regions.
