About

Guy Georges, born Guy Rampillon, is known in France as a serial killer and rapist convicted for a series of crimes committed in Paris between 1991 and 1997. Nicknamed "the East Paris killer" or "the Beast of the Bastille," he was tried and convicted in April 2001 for the deaths of seven women and received a life sentence with parole ineligibility for 22 years.

His biography shows a childhood marked by family instability and periods in foster homes and state institutions, with reports of abuse beginning in adolescence. During the 1980s and 1990s he was involved in multiple episodes of violence against women, some resulting in attempted homicide and serious assaults.

Georges was identified as the perpetrator of the murders only in 1998, after DNA sample comparisons linked several crimes. The case prompted criticism over investigative failures and the absence at the time of a centralized DNA database, and it mobilized victims’ families and the media in the search for answers.

The crimes and the subsequent trial left a mark on French public opinion, both because of the scale and brutality of the acts and because of the institutional issues the investigation exposed.
