About
Hanns Eisler was a German‑Austrian composer whose work ranged from the avant-garde of the Second Viennese School to a politically committed neoclassicism. A student of Arnold Schönberg and Anton Webern, he first gained recognition for atonal and serial pieces, later reintroducing tonal elements to serve a theater-oriented and resistive aesthetic.
His long collaboration with Bertolt Brecht and his work composing scores for film and theater shaped much of his output, which includes orchestral repertoire, chamber music, and around 400 songs. In the 1920s he produced important cantatas and choral works, and in subsequent decades he established protest songs and compositions intended for public spaces.
Persecuted by Nazism, he lived in exile in Mexico and the United States; after becoming a target of McCarthyism he returned to Germany and settled in East Berlin. In 1949 he composed the anthem of the German Democratic Republic, and his influence was later recognized by the naming of a music school in his honor.
