About

Jack Landman Goldsmith III is an American legal scholar and law professor, known for his academic work and for government positions related to constitutional law and national security. He holds the Learned Hand chair at Harvard Law School and has conducted extensive research on topics such as international law, federal courts, civil procedure, and public-security issues. A co-founder of the blog Lawfare and a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, his scholarly and editorial work engages contemporary debates about the executive branch and legal constraints.

Under the George W. Bush administration, Goldsmith served as legal counsel at the Department of Defense and later as head of the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice. In those roles he was at the center of controversies over counterterrorism policies, including the review and withdrawal of legal opinions that had authorized interrogation techniques and surveillance programs. His interventions aimed to correct what he regarded as legal excesses by the administration.

Author of several books, including The Terror Presidency, Goldsmith combines practical executive experience with critical analysis of the use of law in crisis contexts. His public record places him as an influential voice in debates over the balance between security and rights, and he remains a reference in studies of presidential powers and legal limits in times of emergency.
