About

Jean‑Michel Blanquer is a jurist, university professor and French public administrator, known for a long career in educational and ministerial roles. Trained in law and political science, he became a professor agrégé and directed the Institut des Hautes Études de l’Amérique Latine (IHEAL) before holding senior positions in school administration, including rector of académie in French Guiana and in Créteil. As director general for school education (DGESCO), he periodically influenced policies to reinforce basic skills and measures to support early‑grade catch‑up in education.

Appointed Minister of Education and Youth in 2017, Blanquer led significant reforms of upper secondary education and the baccalauréat, remaining in the post through successive terms until 2022, when he was replaced. His ministerial tenure was marked by structural initiatives and controversies over budget priorities and the reorganization of teaching posts.

After leaving active politics in 2022, he returned to academia as a professor of public law at University Paris II. His career combines administrative experience, academic output and a lasting impact on French education policy.
