About
Jerry Coker was an American jazz saxophonist and influential educator whose career alternated between performance and music education. He began as a professional musician in the 1950s, playing with bandleaders such as Woody Herman and Stan Kenton, and recorded both as a leader and as a sideman alongside names like Nat Pierce and Mel Lewis.
From the 1960s onward, Coker increasingly focused on teaching and composition, developing programs and pedagogical methods aimed at the world of jazz. He taught at several significant institutions, including Duke University, the University of Miami — where he helped establish one of the first formal jazz programs at the Frost School of Music — and North Texas State University.
At the University of Tennessee he founded the Studio Music and Jazz program and served on the faculty for decades. His influence is also evident in the training of notable students such as Randy Brecker and Pat Metheny.
Author of several instructional books — including works on improvisation, jazz language, and jazz keyboard — Coker advocated a comprehensive study of jazz that integrates history, instrumental technique, and theory. His pedagogical legacy was acknowledged with his induction into the Jazz Educators Hall of Fame in 1994.
