John Lear

About

John Olsen Lear was an American aviator whose career combined aeronautical achievements with public notoriety for conspiracy theories about UFOs. The son of industrialist Bill Lear, he earned distinction as a pilot from his teenage years, setting flight records — including a round‑the‑world trip in a LearJet in 1966 — and worked as a cargo pilot on missions tied to the CIA between the 1960s and 1980s.

From the 1980s onward, Lear emerged in UFO circles by releasing documents and testimonies that alleged a secret collaboration between governments and extraterrestrials, including accounts about a committee called "Majestic 12," as well as abductions, implants, and underground bases. His material circulated in the networks and bulletins of the time and influenced other writers and investigators of the phenomenon.

Those claims made Lear a polarizing figure: admired within parts of the conspiratorial community for outlining wide‑ranging theories, he was also criticized by skeptical researchers and journalists who dismissed his assertions as unverified or as disinformation. In any case, his activity helped shape contemporary imaginings of UFOs and fed public debate about government secrecy and UFO reports.
