About

Josefina Niggli was a playwright and novelist born in Mexico who wrote in English about Mexican and Mexican‑American themes throughout the twentieth century. The daughter of an Anglo‑European expatriate family, her work moved between folkloric tradition and the country’s modern history, addressing the Mexican Revolution, the soldaderas, and the border identity experienced by characters split between two cultures.

In the 1930s and 1940s she published collections of plays and novels that aimed to acquaint North American audiences with Mexican realities; works such as Mexican Folk Plays and Mexican Village established her as a singular voice that anticipated the Chicano movement. Her play Soldadera and other writings show a sustained concern with gender, ethnicity, and social justice.

She also worked in radio, film, and television, collaborating with Hollywood studios and writing scripts and programs; later she devoted herself to university teaching, helping to found the theatre department at Western Carolina University, which now preserves a collection of her papers and has named a theatre in her honor. Critical reassessment of her work from the 1990s onward has established her as a forerunner to later Chicana writers.
