Juan O'Gorman

About

Juan O'Gorman (Francisco Javier Juan O'Gorman) was a Mexican painter and architect recognized as a central figure of the second generation of Mexican Muralism. His paintings engage with the history, landscape and legends of revolutionary Mexico, and are notable for technical experimentation, including the use of colored stones in mural panels.

In architecture, O'Gorman is considered a forerunner of a functionalist phase of modernism, reconciling concerns for efficiency with solutions that met popular needs. He also developed an organicist strand, aiming to integrate buildings with their surroundings and to exploit the potential of spaces.

Over his career he built a reputation as a complete artist, able to combine aesthetic sensitivity with practical functionality. His work in mural painting and architecture helped establish modern languages in twentieth‑century Mexico and left a legacy in the relationship between public art and architectural design.
