About

Kate ter Horst was a Dutch figure whose actions during World War II brought her wide recognition as a caregiver to Allied soldiers wounded in the Battle of Arnhem. The wife of the mayor of Oosterbeek and mother of six, she opened her home as a regimental aid post when British paratroopers regrouped in the village during Operation Market Garden. Over eight days of fighting she tended to about 250 servicemen, improvising essential supplies and offering comfort to the dying — deeds that earned her the nickname “The Angel of Arnhem.”

After the war she recounted these experiences in the book Cloud Over Arnhem (1959) and took part in the film Theirs Is the Glory, in which veterans reenacted episodes of the battle. In recognition of their service, she and her husband were named honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire by the British ambassador to the Netherlands.

Kate ter Horst’s memory remained linked to civilian sacrifice and wartime solidarity; her story was also referenced by later film productions about Arnhem, reinforcing her public legacy.
