About

Lillian Gish was one of the most influential pioneering actresses of American cinema, with a career spanning theater, silent film, sound film, and television for more than seven decades. She became a central figure in D. W. Griffith’s productions, bringing acting techniques to the medium that helped define the language of filmed drama. Her role in The Birth of a Nation (1915) and performances in films such as Intolerance, Broken Blossoms and Way Down East built her image as a tragic heroine and cemented her reputation as the “First Lady of American Cinema.”

In the 1910s and 1920s she was one of the biggest stars of the silent era; the physical and emotional demands of memorable scenes—such as the ice floe sequence in Way Down East—illustrate her artistic commitment and the personal sacrifice she made for her work. Although she directed only once, she retained creative influence throughout her career and successfully moved into the stage, sound films and television, receiving belated recognition with an Academy Award nomination for Duel in the Sun and notable roles such as in The Night of the Hunter.

In her later decades she became an advocate for silent-film preservation and received several honorary awards, including an Honorary Oscar and the AFI Life Achievement Award, consolidating a lasting legacy as a historical reference in the art of film acting.
