About

Lodewijk van Deyssel, the pen name of Karel Joan Lodewijk Alberdingk Thijm, was an important voice in Dutch literature as a critic, novelist and poet. The son of a man of letters, he was raised in a Catholic milieu and early on joined the Tachtigers, a literary renewal movement influenced by Impressionism and Naturalism that sought to revitalize poetry and prose in the Netherlands.

During the final decades of the nineteenth century he published criticism and essays in central literary periodicals and, with others, founded magazines that shaped the cultural scene. Initially an adherent of Naturalism and an admirer of Émile Zola, he gradually moved away from that current and explored mystical and sensorial approaches, under the influence of writers such as Huysmans and Maeterlinck.

His output includes novels, prose poems and critical texts known for their forceful language and impassioned judgments. He received recognition for his work, including the Hendrik Tollens Prize, and left a legacy as an organizer of institutions supporting writers’ professional interests and as an influential figure in the aesthetic shift from Naturalism toward more introspective currents.
