About
Louis Vola was a prominent French jazz double-bassist, also known for playing accordion and composing. Musically trained from a young age, he performed on the French scene in the 1920s and 1930s, appearing with orchestras on the Côte d’Azur and leading ensembles at balls and cabarets. In Paris he organized the group that became the Quintette du Hot Club de France, a decisive project for the development of gypsy jazz by bringing together musicians such as Django and Joseph Reinhardt.
As a session musician and accompanist, Vola worked with international jazz names — among them Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins — which made him one of the most sought-after bassists of the era. In 1940 he joined Ray Ventura’s ensemble and spent several years in Argentina, where he remained musically active and formed a quintet under the name “Le Quintette du HCF.”
Back in France he sustained an active career in Nice and Paris, taking part in commemorations and recordings. He is remembered both for his contribution to the creation of the Quintette du Hot Club and for his role as a link between European jazz and American artists, leaving a legacy on the twentieth-century French jazz scene.
