About

Ludwig August Theodor Beck was a German Army general and Chief of the General Staff from 1935 to 1938, known for his Prussian training and a career that began in World War I. He became technically prominent with the publication of the tactical manual Die Truppenführung (1931–33), a work that influenced the German army’s exercises and doctrine during the interwar period.

As Chief of the General Staff, Beck clashed with Hitler’s policies while trying to preserve the armed forces’ autonomy and opposing the regime’s expansionist ambitions. In 1938, disagreeing with plans to annex the Sudetenland and Czechoslovakia, he resigned in protest, a move that underscored his distance from the Nazi government’s political decisions.

Within the military resistance to Nazism, Beck joined conspiracies to depose Hitler and, had the July 20, 1944, assassination attempt succeeded, was slated to head a provisional government. After the coup failed, he was arrested and died by suicide on July 21, 1944.
