About

Maria of Aragon and Castile was an Aragonese infanta, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon, and became queen consort of Portugal by marrying Dom Manuel I in 1500. The union had a strong dynastic and political purpose, integrating Portugal into the web of Iberian alliances that would shape the sixteenth century and contributing to the dynastic consequences that culminated in the events of 1580.

As queen, Maria helped consolidate relations between the peninsular royal houses; her marriage followed the death of her sister Isabella and reflected a policy of rapprochement among the kingdoms. The marriage produced several children of dynastic importance: among them John III, the future king of Portugal, and Isabella, who married Emperor Charles V, as well as other princes and princesses who joined European royal houses.

She died in 1517 at the age of 35 and was initially buried in the Convent of Madre de Deus; her remains were later transferred to the Jerónimos Monastery. Her role as consort and mother left an imprint on the political and successional alignment of the Portuguese monarchy during the Renaissance.
