About

Zoot Sims, born John Haley Sims, was an American saxophonist whose career spanned much of postwar jazz. A specialist on tenor sax — and also notable on alto and, later, soprano — he first came to prominence in the “Four Brothers” section of Woody Herman’s big band, exposure that led to a long career as a soloist and frequent collaborator.

From the 1950s through the 1980s he kept an active freelance schedule, forming enduring partnerships with colleagues such as Gerry Mulligan and Al Cohn and recording with a wide range of artists, from Count Basie to Sarah Vaughan. His discography includes albums as a leader as well as recordings in ensembles with prominent circuit musicians, along with guest appearances on records by artists like Jack Kerouac and Phoebe Snow.

Recognized for phrasing shaped by influences such as Lester Young and Ben Webster, Sims was praised by critics and peers for restrained musicality and lyrical improvisation. In his later years he recorded regularly for the Pablo label and maintained stable partnerships up until shortly before his death, securing his place as one of the important American jazz saxophonists of the 20th century.
