About

Michael John “Mick” Collins was a revolutionary leader, soldier, and central political figure in Ireland’s struggle for independence in the early 20th century. He held key posts in the republic proclaimed by Dáil Éireann: Minister for Finance, Director of Intelligence of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), and President of the Provisional Government, and he was a member of the delegation that negotiated the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

Known for his organizational and strategic skill, Collins built the republican intelligence service and organized guerrilla operations, including the creation of the so-called “Squad” and the coordination of IRA mobile columns during the War of Independence. He also set up a functioning finance ministry that raised funds for the new republic under conditions of repression.

His political and military actions were decisive in moving the nationalist movement from insurrection toward state institutions, although the Treaty caused division and led to the Civil War, in which Collins was killed in 1922. He is a revered figure in Irish history, with a complex legacy tied both to independence and to the controversies of the period.
