About

William Howard “Monk” Montgomery was an American jazz bassist recognized as a pioneer of the electric bass in jazz. He began working professionally at age 30, when he joined Lionel Hampton’s orchestra, and by accounts adopted the Fender Precision Bass in 1952–53. His participation in the 1953 session with The Art Farmer Septet, arranged by Quincy Jones, is cited as one of the first studio recordings to feature electric bass and demonstrates his command of walking lines, bebop melodies and ostinatos with Latin influence.

Brother of musicians Wes and Buddy Montgomery, Monk played in family groups such as The Montgomery Brothers and The Mastersounds, and also collaborated with groups like The Jazz Crusaders and artists including Hugh Masekela and Cal Tjader. He plucked the electric bass with his thumb — a technique he shared with Wes on guitar — and later used a Fender Jazz Bass, playing with a felt pick.

Beyond his work as a performer and recording artist, Montgomery played organizational roles in the jazz world: he served on the National Endowment for the Arts jazz advisory panel, helped establish the Maseru Music Festival and founded the Las Vegas Jazz Society. His legacy lies in popularizing the electric bass in jazz and influencing subsequent generations of bassists.
