About

Paul Reynaud was a prominent French politician and jurist in the interwar period, known for economic liberalism and firm opposition to Nazi Germany. A deputy from 1919 and vice president of the Alliance Démocratique, he built a reputation as an advocate of rearmament and a critic of appeasement policy, opposing the 1938 Munich Agreement.

Already in the 1930s he promoted liberal measures to confront economic stagnation: as finance minister he launched a program of deregulation and austerity that restored investor confidence, while supporting military modernization inspired by the ideas of Charles de Gaulle. In March 1940 he became prime minister during the difficult context of the German invasion.

Reynaud refused to split over surrender and tried, without success, to prevent the armistice; he resigned on 16 June 1940, was arrested and ultimately transferred to German custody until 1945. After the war he returned to the National Assembly, held cabinet posts, defended a united Europe and took part in the constitutional work that led to the Fifth Republic, leaving government in 1962 over disagreements about electoral reforms.
