About

Fernando of Austria was an Infante of Spain and Prince of Asturias, the son of King Philip II and Anna of Austria. Born into a dynastic context preoccupied with succession, his birth prompted celebrations at court, reflecting the king’s relief after the death and incapacity of the eldest son, Carlos.

Raised apart from his parents as was customary at the time, Fernando was part of a large brood that included siblings who did not survive childhood. The biography highlights Philip II’s paternal habits, often noted for displays of affection toward his children, countering the severe image that popular historiography sometimes assigns to the king.

In the summer of 1578, still a child, Fernando fell gravely ill with dysentery in Galapagar. Despite contemporary medical care and royal attention, he relapsed and died at the age of six, an event that altered the line of succession and affected the royal family. His death illustrates the high infant and child mortality of the sixteenth century and the medical vulnerabilities of the period.
