About

Prince Wilhelm of Baden (Ludwig Wilhelm August) was a 19th‑century military officer and political figure from the House of Zähringen. Educated in the Prussian army, he reached the rank of infantry general and commanded Baden units in key conflicts of German unification, including the Austro‑Prussian War (1866) and the Franco‑Prussian War (1870–71), taking part in operations around Dijon. His military career reflected the shift of southern German forces into the Prussian sphere, and he received honors such as the Order of Merit bestowed by Kaiser Wilhelm II.

In addition to his military service, he held political posts from a young age in the first chamber of the Diet of the Grand Duchy of Baden and represented Baden in the Reichstag of the German Empire from 1871 to 1873 as a member of the Imperial German Party (Free Conservative Party). He was also considered as a candidate for the Greek throne after the deposition of Otto, an episode that illustrates the complex dynastic relations in Europe at the time.

Married to Princess Maria of Leuchtenberg, he was the father of Prince Maximilian of Baden, the last chancellor of the German Empire. He died in 1897 in Karlsruhe, where he was buried; his life exemplifies the intertwining of military service, political activity, and dynastic ties in the era of the German Empire.
