About

Prince Franz Maria Luitpold of Bavaria was a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty and a career officer in the Bavarian Army. A son of King Ludwig III, he served as a commander of infantry units, rising to the rank of brigadier general and heading the 4th Bavarian Infantry Division during the First World War.

Leading his division, Franz took part in notable operations on the Western Front, including Passchendaele and Kemmelberg, and received major military honors such as the Military Order of Max Joseph (Knight’s Cross and later Commander) and the Prussian Pour le Mérite. His military career illustrates the close ties between the Bavarian royal house and the armed forces during the imperial era.

He married Princess Isabella Antonie of Croÿ in 1912 and had six children, maintaining dynastic links with other European houses. After the end of the war he lived on his estate in Leutstetten, where he died in 1957; he was buried in the Michaelskirche in Munich.

Franz’s legacy is chiefly associated with the presence of prince-officers in Bavarian military command and with the role of the nobility in the campaigns of the First World War.
