About

Prince Georg of Bavaria was a member of the Wittelsbach royal house whose life crossed the military and ecclesiastical spheres. The son of Prince Leopold and a favored grandson of imperial figures, he began a career in the Bavarian Army, rising through the cavalry officer ranks and serving actively in World War I on the Western and Eastern fronts, where he received the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class and attained the rank of colonel.

After the war, Georg left the military to study theology: he was ordained a priest in 1921, earned a doctorate in canon law and completed training at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. In Rome he held honorary posts at the Vatican — including secular canon of St. Peter’s and, in 1941, apostolic protonotary — and lived with the Franciscans at the Villa San Francesco.

He maintained close ties with European royal families and fulfilled ceremonial and institutional roles, such as head of the Constantinian Order and president of the Royal Automobile Club of Bavaria. He donated funds for the bronze doors of St. Peter’s and is buried in the Teutonic Cemetery. Some sources differ on the circumstances of his death in 1943, so caution is advised regarding final details.
