About

Robin Olds was a United States Air Force officer and fighter pilot whose service career spanned from World War II to the Vietnam War. A West Point graduate and the son of a pioneer in military aviation, he became known as an outstanding pilot: a "triple ace" with 16 combined aerial victories, and is regarded by aviation historians as one of the most respected squadron commanders.

A pioneer in the jet age, Olds commanded two fighter wings and earned a reputation for his combat skill and leadership on missions. After returning from Vietnam he was promoted to brigadier general but moved into nonoperational roles, including commandant of cadets at the Air Force Academy and positions in the Inspector General’s office.

His public life included personal notoriety—he married the actress Ella Raines—and internal controversy; accounts attribute limits on his advancement to both his dissenting stance toward senior officers and to alcohol use. Recognized for his influence on aerial tactics and for the image of the pilot‑commander in the postwar era, he left a lasting legacy among military professionals and historians.
