About

Rudolf Levy was a German Expressionist painter of Jewish origin whose career developed across Germany, France, and Italy. Trained at the academies in Karlsruhe and Munich, he joined influential artistic circles — in Paris he gathered German-speaking artists at Le Dôme and worked in Henri Matisse’s studios — and exhibited at the Salon d’Automne. His output includes landscapes and plein air scenes produced during travels in the south of France and Tunisia, reflecting his study with plein air painters and an Expressionist attention to color.

After World War I, in which he served as a soldier and received the Iron Cross, Levy settled in Berlin and maintained professional ties with the dealer Alfred Flechtheim, who organized his first solo exhibition. He was a member and director of the Berlin Secession, establishing a presence in the German art scene of the 1920s.

With Nazi persecution his situation became precarious: his works were placed on the list of “degenerate art” and, living in internal exile in Italy, Spain, and the United States, he faced difficulties finding refuge. In 1943 he was arrested by the Gestapo and deported; he is believed to have died during transport to Auschwitz. His legacy endures in the memory of German Expressionism and the European artistic networks of the early twentieth century.
