About

Sebastian Matta, mentioned here as the twin brother of Gordon Matta-Clark, appears within a family context of a generation of artists with a strong international presence. The son of Anne Clark and the surrealist painter Roberto Matta, Sebastian grew up in an artistic environment marked by experimentation and connections with central figures of the twentieth century.

Although less documented than his brother Gordon—known for architectural interventions and projects such as FOOD and Fake Estates—Sebastian was also an artist, working alongside the family’s art circuit. Sources indicate that his career and work were overshadowed by Gordon’s public visibility, and that his personal life ended tragically in 1976 by suicide.

Given the scarcity of details about his output, it is prudent not to attribute specific works or interpretations of his legacy without additional sources. Sebastian’s memory, however, is part of a family devoted to the arts and helps illuminate the affective and biographical context that surrounded the artistic scene in which his siblings had a more public role.
