About

Vidkun Quisling was a Norwegian military officer and politician whose actions during World War II deeply marked Norway’s history. Trained as a military officer and experienced as a diplomat in Russia and in humanitarian missions, Quisling became known for his work with Fridtjof Nansen during the Russian famine of 1921. He returned to Norwegian politics, serving as Minister of Defence (1931–1933) and, in 1933, founded the National Unity party, a fascist-oriented group that never achieved significant parliamentary representation.

With the German invasion of Norway in 1940, Quisling attempted a coup and was later installed by the Nazi occupiers as head of government in 1942, serving as the leader of a puppet regime in collaboration with the German authorities. His collaborationist government took part in repressive policies and in the persecution of Jews.

After the liberation, Quisling was tried for fraud, murder and high treason; he was convicted and executed in October 1945. His name entered the lexicon as a synonym for “traitor” or “collaborator,” reflecting the historical judgement that he left no legitimate political legacy beyond the infamy tied to his cooperation with Nazism.
