About

Vilfredo Pareto was an Italian economist, sociologist and political scientist whose work shaped economic theory and sociology at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Trained as an engineer, he served as a director in the railways before turning to university teaching in Lausanne, where he established key contributions to microeconomics, such as the concept of Pareto optimality and the formalization of indifference curves.

His research on income distribution identified the strong concentration of wealth now associated with the so-called Pareto law (80/20), a hypothesis later applied widely across many fields. In sociology, Pareto sought to make the discipline a science, distinguishing between “logical” and “non-logical” actions and emphasizing the role of emotions, traditions and residual sentiments in social life.

Pareto’s intellectual life intersected with complex political contexts: he maintained personal ties to and offered praise for figures of Italian fascism, a stance that generated controversy and critical reassessment later on. His work left a lasting legacy in the analysis of economic efficiency, social choice theory and the exploration of the non-rational foundations of human action.
