About

Paul Howard “Dizzy” Trout was a right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1939 to 1952, best known for his years with the Detroit Tigers. After modest early seasons, he became a central figure on the team during the 1940s—especially during World War II—leading the American League in wins (1943) and in ERA, complete games, and innings pitched in 1944. In 1945 he made a decisive contribution to the Tigers’ World Series title, winning a key game in the series.

Beyond his pitching, Trout was notable for his offensive ability for the position, finishing his career with 20 home runs, and for forming, with Hal Newhouser, one of the league’s most productive pitching tandems of that period. After retiring as a player he worked as a broadcaster and commentator on Tigers games, gaining popularity for his colloquial style.

He attempted a comeback in 1957 and served as an instructor and as a front-office member in baseball organizations. Honored in his native state, he was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. He died in 1972, remembered as one of the Tigers’ leading pitchers in the immediate postwar era.
